Bathroom organisation mistakes everyone makes

And how to fix them. - by Laura Barry

Bathroom organisation mistakes everyone makes

If your family shares one bathroom, then it’s likely to be one of the busiest rooms in the house. A bathroom isn’t just for showering – it’s where we do our hair, apply makeup, it’s where we keep our medications and other daily essentials. Because of this, getting a bathroom organised (and keeping it that way!) can seem like an insurmountable task. However, it can be done.

Mistake #1 Not keeping daily items within easy reach

The best way to streamline your bathroom experience is by keeping each person’s daily items grouped together. For example, keep deodorant, tooth brushes, hair brushes, moisturisers and other similar items all together. Items that are used sporadically, or once a week, can be stored in other places.

Mistake #2 Not storing similar things together

The best way to keep your bathroom organised and make things easy to find is to keep like-things together. That means keeping all medications in the one place, all hair tools in the one place, all dental, bath and body products together.

Mistake #3 Storing everything in the bathroom

It’s unnecessary to store back-up products, such as extra tissues, makeup wipes and other disposables, and towels, in the bathroom. Not only does it take up a lot of space, but these can be stored elsewhere until needed. Towels can be stored in a cupboard with sheets and blankets.

Mistake #4 Not maximising your space

Look at the storage in your bathroom and think critically about how deep the drawers and cabinets are, and try to locate items in the most suitable space. For example, if you have a very deep drawer – and also own a hair straightener, curling tong, hair dryer and other bulky tools – pop them all in a deep drawer together. Meanwhile, it would be best to store small products in a shallow drawer, and tall, skinny products on narrow shelves with height.

Mistake #5 Not decluttering before organising

The key to an organised and functional bathroom is only owning what you really need. It’s time to throw out out-of-date skincare products and medications, dispose of tools you don’t use and give the space a clean out. Then it’s time to start organising.

Mistake #6 Not using storage products

Keeping your bathroom cabinets and drawers tidy and organised can simply come down to good storage products. Use trays in cupboards to group similar products together, and dividers in drawers to separate one family member’s toiletries from another. Sometimes it’s easier to just have a designated basket or box to toss things in.
