Wallpaper is making a comeback in the bathroom - but is it a good idea?

Less tiles and more personality! - by Livia Gamble
  • 30 Jun 2022

It might not make sense to everyone, but using wallpaper in the bathroom is something we're about to see a lot more of.

And what's not to love about this bathroom trend?

Sarah Yarrow, Principal Interior Designer at Sarah Yarrow Interiors says, “Wallpaper has started to come back into the bathroom a little bit more.

“We’re seeing a lot of designs use less tiles and instead featuring wallpaper particularly behind vanities and in powder rooms.”

“It’s such a fun way to add personality into an individual space.”

But is bathroom wallpaper a good idea?

Yes! Bathroom wallpaper is a great idea but there's a few caveats. The wall and wallpaper must be prepared correctly, and you'll need to manage the temperature and splash zones in your bathroom. For example, if you're placing the wallpaper behind the sink, consider a high splash back. Using a dehumidifier and installing a high velocity ceiling fan are also recommended.

Another huge pro is the list of patterns and colours available in wallpaper, giving you a wide variety to choose from. Not to mention, it’s fairly easy to install. And once it’s up your wall, it should be long-lasting.

On the downside, there is a chance of peeling and potentially mould. Touch ups can be hard too! And when it’s time for a change, removing wallpaper can be tricky!

But don’t let that put you off.

Paper vs vinyl wallpaper

When it comes to wet rooms such as the bathroom, vinyl wallpaper is the top choice. But that doesn’t mean you can’t choose another material like paper or fabric. You could also look into a removable wallpaper. Just make sure it’s treated correctly before installing. If you aren’t sure, read the instructions or talk to a professional.

If you go for a vinyl wallpaper, make sure it’s pure vinyl and not paper-coated vinyl.

How to prep your wall

It’s essential to prep your bathroom wall before applying wallpaper. The wall must be clean, flat and smooth. Avoid textured walls and unpainted drywall or plaster.

Once you have your level surface, apply an anti-fungicide paste and mould-resistant adhesive to minimise any unwanted black spots showing up down the track.

Now it's time to apply your wallpaper - for extra tips, read our step-by-step guide to applying wallpaper.
