The Wayside Chapel in Sydney’s famous Kings Cross has provided friendship, care and support for people on the streets since 1964.
Hidden amidst the city’s high rises, you’ll find the chapel’s amazing edible rooftop garden.
Established in 2011, the garden is a way to give participants in their Day to Day Living Program the chance to learn new skills and enjoy the benefits of gardening, while providing organic produce for the chapel’s café and op-shop at the same time.
The head gardener, John Kingston, is giving Graham a personal tour of this very special space.
ABOUT WAYSIDE CHAPEL
High up on the roof of The Wayside Chapel is a 200 square metre garden filled with over 50 different varieties of fruit, herbs and vegetables. The garden – boasting sweeping views across the parklands and the CBD – is a community space where disadvantaged people and local residents can work together, sharing skills and supporting each other to nurture a vast array of plants.
Many participants will never have the chance to have a garden of their own and take enormous pride in tending to Wayside’s green space. Each week, participants plant new seedlings and harvest produce with assistance from skilled volunteers. For more info go to: https://www.waysidechapel.org.au
