If you love your dedicated bath time, then this news will leave you making sure you never miss one ever again!
It turns out, thanks to some new research by the Loughborough University in England, that a bath may be just as good for you as a good ol' exercise sweat session - without the need to move!
A researcher named Dr. Steve Faulkner from the University, studied 14 people who took an hour-long soak in a 40-degree bath, as well as participated in an hour-long bike ride. It was to study 'passive heating' and its affects on the body, namely how it can improve your health by way of blood sugar control and the number of calories burned as well as its effect on type 2 diabetes.
The tests were designed to raise the core body temperature by just one degree to Dr. Steve and his team could measure how many calories were burned in a session.
Now, obviously, cycling for an hour did burn more calories, but the good news is that a bath can burn as many calories as a half an hour walk!
"The overall blood sugar response to both conditions was similar, but peak blood sugar after eating was about 10% lower when participants took a hot bath compared with when they exercised," Dr Faulkner reported.
"This suggests that repeated passive heating may contribute to reducing chronic inflammation, which is often present with long-term diseases, such as type 2 diabetes".
With findings like this, you're probably better off still opting for that half hour's walk or spin class, but it's nice to know a bath not only just relaxes you anymore.
