Most hotel safes allow guests to set their own code on the safe. However, the video posted by Youtube user Lock Picking Lawyer, clearly shows that any secret code can be overridden by a codebreaker number – that’s a number that hotel employees use to get into safes should the guest forget their own code.
In the video, the person sets a code, check that it is locked, tries to open with an incorrect code – which doesn’t work – to prove that the safe is locked. The person then enters the code 999999 and the door springs open!
Apparently this number and 0000 is often used by safe companies as code breaking numbers,
The next time you decide to leave laptops, passports or jewellery in a hotel safe, it might be wise to check if the usual code breaking numbers work on your safe before leaving your belongings unattended.
