With all the outdoor entertaining that happens in the warmer months, your alfresco living zone will get plenty of attention. If you’re after a gorgeous centrepiece with a difference for your deck’s dining table, check out this fabulous terrarium bowl filled with air plants (Tillandsia species). All that air plants need to thrive is a mist of water about once a week, so this terrarium is pretty much maintenance-free and will last you well through summer and beyond.
Tip You can buy tillandsias as packaged plants, visit collectorscorner.com.au for stockists.
Step 1 Choose a selection of tillandsias with different leaf textures and colours, which are the right size for your bowl.
Step 2 Cover a third of bowl base with natural pebbles, a third with white pebbles and remaining with peat moss.
Step 3 Place plants by simply pushing them into the medium. Air plants don’t need soil for nutrition, only support, so you can place them where you wish. If you are including a flowering tillandsia, position it near centre of bowl so flower spike can protrude through opening at top.
Step 4 Mist plants with a fine water spray. You don’t need to water tillandsias – just give them a mist about once a week.
Above: Make mini jar versions using just peat moss to mark your place settings.
