This is the worst airport for delayed flights

And it’s the gateway to an iconic landmark. - by Laura Barry
  • 24 Sep 2018

Going on holiday is one life’s greatest luxuries. Whether you’re exploring your own backyard and getting acquainted with all of Australia, or heading overseas, there’s one thing for certain: no one likes delayed flights. And it turns out that the worst airport for delayed flights happens to be the gateway to one of Australia’s biggest tourist destinations.

The Federal Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics has found that only 22.6 per cent of flights that depart from Ayers Rock Airport leave on time, meaning 77.4 per cent of flights are late. According to the bureau, the findings are the worst recorded history of monthly on-time performance data collected by the organisation.

Karena Noble, Voyages director of public relations, blamed incoming flights that arrive late for the massive delays seen at Ayers Rock Airport, telling The Australian:

“This was caused by one of three factors, including high winds between the east coast and Ayers Rock, engineering issues to flights which required attention and delays due to weather events at both Sydney and Melbourne airports."

Operated by Voyages Indigenous Tourism, the airport is just a 20-minute drive from Uluru and welcomes around 300,000 passengers a year. According to the report, some airline carriers performed better than others. For flights departing the Uluru airport, Virgin recorded 35.5 per cent of flights departing on time, and Jetstar struggled to get 10 per cent of flights out on time.
