In the latest step towards becoming a more environmentally conscious community, the City of Sydney is supporting an initiative aimed at cutting down the waste of disposable coffee cups.
In an effort to stop the 3 billion coffee cups wasted every year, the Responsible Cafés organisation is connecting like-minded businesses and consumers with one simple idea – BYO!
As part of the latest round of environmental knowledge exchange sponsorships, the City of Sydney’s Lord Mayor Clover Moore has come out as a strong supporter of the movement.
“There’s no dedicated coffee cup recycling facility in Australia yet, so we’re getting behind the ‘BYO coffee cup’ campaign to get to the root of the problem,” the Lord Mayor said. "Responsible Cafes connects and promotes cafes that encourage customers to refuse takeaway cups for good, and they're aiming to recruit another 100 new city cafes."
The government funding is encouraging espresso hotspots to join the Responsible Cafes database and to offer customers who BYO with discounts on their daily cuppa. With coffee stops such as BangBang Espresso and Soul Origins already involved, it’s basically a win win! Win for us and win for the environment.
