How you can snoop through Australia’s most sustainable homes this weekend

It’s Sustainable House Day on Sunday! - by Laura Barry

How you can snoop through Australia’s most sustainable homes this weekend

Sustainable House Day is Sunday the 15th of September and this year more than 235 of Australia’s most sustainably built homes will be open to the public. It’s the perfect opportunity to snoop through the fancy eco-friendly homes in your neighbourhood, and pick up ideas for your current home, build or renovation.

The open homes will showcase homes with design features that are healthy, comfortable and low-cost and the homeowners will be on hand to answer any of your questions.

What can you expect to see?

The event is nationwide, and this year many of the houses have either migrated off gas to be all electric, or are being built without gas in the first place. Many of the home are also net-zero energy, which means they produce more energy than they consume which means little to no electricity bills for homeowners!

Earth building construction is also a prevalent design feature this year, and includes homes that have utilised materials such as hemp, rammed earth and straw bales.

What is sustainable House Day all about?

"Everyone wants a home that is well-designed, healthy, and runs efficiently in an age of high energy bills," said Donna Luckman, CEO, Renew.

"Sustainable House Day allows Australians to see real homes that have achieved this, and get unbiased advice on how to make their homes more comfortable and cheaper to run," said Luckman.

236 homes in seven states/territories will be on display, and more than 35,000 people are expected to attend. Entry to homes is free, with some homes requesting a gold coin donation and a few homes conducting ticketed tours.
