Study finds drinking coffee can help you burn more calories

Although everyone may insist that the key to saving money is giving up those ‘unnecessary’ café-quality morning coffees, it turns out that your daily caffeine hit may have extra benefits as well – making it well worth the $4.

Scientists from the University of Nottingham in the UK have found that drinking a cup of coffee may help you burn more calories. 

The study, which was published in the journal Scientific Reports, found that coffee can stimulate ‘brown fat’ in the body, which burns calories in order to generate body heat.

According to the experts who conducted the study, there are two types of fat cells: brown cells – which create body heat, and white cells – which store fat. Although the research is still in early stages and small-scale trial, researchers have found that coffee can stimulate the brown fat, to encourage the body to burn more calories.

In an article on the Nottingham University website, Professor Michael Symonds, from the School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham who co-directed the study said;

“Brown fat works in a different way to other fat in your body and produces heat by burning sugar and fat, often in response to cold. Increasing its activity improves blood sugar control as well as improving blood lipid levels and the extra calories burnt help with weight loss.”
