3 colour schemes to give your kitchen a spring makeover

If your kitchen is feeling a little ho-hum after winter, now is the perfect time to give it a makeover. There’s no need to commit to the full reno – work a little magic with paint! Colour is a wonderful way to express your personal tastes and preferences, from warm, earthy tones or soothing, sophisticated neutrals to a veritable riot of bright, happy hues.

Kinship

If you love terracotta tiles, furniture that’s a little on the rustic side and the colourful warmth of ethnic textiles, you’ll love Dulux’s ‘Kinship’ palette – a combination of rich, earthy hues intermingled with cosy, neutral shades. ‘Very Terracotta’ or ‘Red Ochre’ on just one – or more – walls will infuse your kitchen with a Mediterranean glow that looks perfect with timber floors and cabinetry, stone benchtops and touches of greenery. Keep things light and airy with ‘Natural White’ on the ceiling. Add contrasting colours sparingly – cool blue-grey ‘Hildegard’ or organic green ‘Herbalist’ on the inside of shelves or cabinets, or a bright pop of colour, such as ‘Outrageous Red’ on a couple of painted chairs.

Essential

If paler colours and neutrals are more your thing, but you’re bored with the blandness of your kitchen, check out the Dulux ‘Essential’ palette. Neutral should be subtle, never bland or boring! Liven up the look with different textures that will give your space character and ensure your neutral colour scheme is never dull. For example, you can add character to your walls with a finish, such as Dulux Suede Effect or Dulux Concrete Effect, that enable you to control the level of texture you want. Then, instead of plain white for the walls, choose a subtle, soft grey, such as ‘Dieskau’, with a ‘Terrace White’ ceiling. Need a focal point? Paint wooden furniture in a rich, warm colour, like ‘Clay Court’ or highlight doors in a bold contrast, such as ‘Noble Knight’ – to elevate your ‘neutral’ scheme from simple to sophisticated.

Escapade

Ready for a total change? Take your kitchen on a colour vacation with the Dulux ‘Escapade’ palette. A playful clash of colours helps to brighten your space and feels as good as a holiday. Cover those blah walls with a coat of gorgeous ‘Purple Balance’, highlighting the ceiling and trim in crisp ‘Vivid White’. Now get into some light-hearted fun by painting the cupboard doors and range hood cabinetry in tones of pale mint and teal, like ‘Soft Fresco’ and ‘Solution’. Paint flea market finds to suit your colour scheme and mix them with new accessories – a few highlights in ‘Pale Mustard’ or ‘Carmen’ will make your new spring colour scheme positively sing!
