How to make the most of a small space with colour

The right palette goes a long way. - by Better Homes and Gardens

How to make the most of a small space with colour

When it comes to decorating or renovating your home, size doesn’t always matter. We all have tricky areas of the house that are underutilised, like hallways or oddly shaped or placed nooks. However, even the smallest of spaces, can become larger-than-life with the right colour choices. By injecting a space with character, charm and thoughtful pops of colour, it might just become your favourite corner of your home.

1. Find your colour

Before grabbing a brush, it is important to look at the existing colours of the home and consider the mood you want to create. If you are turning an unused thoroughfare into a cosy study nook – as we did here - you might want to consider a colour palette that reflects feelings of calm, whilst encouraging concentration and focus. A great way to do this successfully is to utilise the tools on offer from colour specialists like Dulux. From colour chips, to sample pots and even receiving free personalized colour advice, the experts know best!

2. Consider the mood

Colours in the range of purple have been associated with creativity, calm and awareness – perfect for long study sessions or working from home!  Here, a feature wall in Dulux Wash&Wear Modest Mauve adds depth to the tucked-in corridor while tying in nicely to the existing colour palette. To add warmth, we have paired with a second, neutral shade in Dulux Wash&Wear Madame Mauve. When choosing your palette, working within a similar tonal range is a simple way of making sure your colours pair well, and the final look is clean, uncluttered and sophisticated.

3. Bring in natural textures

After you have picked the colours and painted the walls, it is time to think about the key pieces of furniture to compliment the new look while providing maximum functionality to the space. Natural textiles and textures, help to soften a space by making it feel warm and inviting. Synonymous with nature, timber furniture will help to bring the outside in, making your tiny space suddenly feel more open. Here, timber shelves bring the warmth out of the paint colours, plus, provide a smart space for storage and display.

4. Think smart

Floating shelving adds to a small room through the appearance of clean long lines, as well as the illusion of additional space. Here inbuilt shelving acts as extra storage that joins to the desk itself. Additionally, a picture shelf made from the same timber will allow you to feature your very own artwork! Running from the left-hand side to the middle of the feature wall, adding to the line that draws your eye across the space, pulling the design together. The minimal design makes it seems like there is more space than there actually is!
