6 best weighted blankets for kids that feel like a comforting hug

Pressure to take the pressure off.
Tree Life.

It’s safe to say that in the past few years, a weighted blanket (AKA calming blanket) has firmly established itself in the home as a cult homewares product.

A blanket usually made heavy with sewn-in glass beads, natural grains or other materials, a weighted blanket aims to aid winding down through even weight distribution, creating a gentle, deep pressure when laid over the body – that often can feel like a comforting hug.

While there are plenty of calming blankets for adults on the market, there are almost just as many for kids.

How heavy should a weighted blanket be for a child?

A weighted blanket used by a kid should generally weigh about 10 per cent of the child’s body weight. So, for example, if your kid weighs 25kg, opt for a 2.5kg weighted blanket. It is also important to note that infants, toddlers or children who are not physically able to remove their blanket independently, should not be using a weighted blanket.

Are weighted blankets good for children?

Yes, weighted blankets have the tick of approval for children. It is, however, recommended that children under the age of three avoid weighted blankets until they are certified safe sleepers. The benefits of weighted blankets for children aged over three years old are impressive, specifically in enhancing the quality of the child’s sleep. It is thought that the evenly distributed weight works to wind down little minds, keeping them asleep throughout the entire night.
