The wonder sponge that does it all - without scratching. - by Tahni Mesann

The $5 smiley sponge sending shoppers into a frenzy

The smiley sponge that amassed a cult-following overseas has landed in Australian stores. The $5 sponge, known as Scrub Daddy, features an instantly-recognisable smiley-face design and was quick to sell out on its first release. The non-scratch, multi-use sponge is a favourite among social media influencers and can be used countless ways to deep clean your home without resorting to harsh chemicals.

The sponge, which is available in-store at Coles, has already won the approval of home-cleaning guru Sophie Hinchcliffe, aka @mrshinchhome.

Mrs Hinch owns a number of the sponges and uses them to clean everything from dishes to makeup brushes and even her washing machine. The sponge is also known for achieving the highest revenue of any product ever featured on the US version of the TV series Shark Tank.

So what’s so special about Scrub Daddy?

The Scrub Daddy is not just a pretty face. The non-scratch polymer sponge changes texture depending on the temperature of water you’re using. So when you’re washing the dishes in the sink with warm water, for example, the sponge will become soft so that things like non-stick pots and pans are cleaned thoroughly without a scratch.

For more heavy-duty applications, like cleaning the barbecue, simply dip the Scrub Daddy in cold water and watch it glide through grime without the need for degreasers. The sponge is also non-scratch, resistant to bad odours and can be disinfected simply by popping it in the dishwasher.

What’s with the smiley face?

The smiley-face design is more than just a fun detail and serves two main purposes. The first, is that it makes the sponge easier to hold. The second, is that it makes the sponge easier to store (there’s a special caddy available that attaches to your sink and allows the sponge to dry quickly and hygienically).
