Sausage dog knitting pattern: basic beef

Tired of knitting the same old scarves and jumpers? Sydney’s Sausage Queen, Chrissy Flanagan has just the thing.

Famous for her sausages, both knitted and edible, Chrissy shares one of her sausage knitting patterns with Better Homes and Gardens.

How to knit a sausage

Skill level:

Medium swagger

Materials:

  • 50g 8 ply yarn in red
  • 50g 8 ply yarn in brown
  • 50g 8 ply yarn in beige
  • 4 mm 80cm circular knitting needle
  • Stuffing
  • Yarn needle

To make the sausage:

Using brown yarn, cast on 12 stitches.

Using magic loop method, join in the round.

Knit 40 rows.

Cast off. Sew in ends.

Using a 15cm length of brown yarn and needle, and working two rows down from the cast on edge, run thread through every second stitch until six stitch have been picked up. Pull tight and tie a double knot in yarn.

Stuff the sausage firmly.

Repeat the tie off as above at the cast off end of the sausage.

Sew in ends.

To make the bun:

Using beige yarn, cast on 8 stitches.

Work 2 rows in stocking stitch. Continue to work in stocking stitch throughout.

Increase 1 stitch at each end of every row to 16 stitches.

Increase 1 stitch at each end of every other row to 24 stitches.

Work 20 rows.

Decrease 1 stitch at each end of every other row to 16 stitches.

Decrease 1 stitch at each end of every row to 8 stitches.

Cast off. Sew in ends.

To make the tomato sauce:

Using red yarn, cast on 3 stitches.

Using i-cord method, work until cord is 40cms long.

Cast off. Sew in ends.

To finish:

Using beige yarn and needle, sew one end of the bun around the edge of one end of the sausage.

Continue to sew the bun to the sausage on each side in turn to ¾ of the way along the sausage.

Stuff inside the bun up to the ¾ mark.

Continue to sew up the sides along the sausage, stuffing the remainder of the bun before sewing along the second edge.

Sew in ends.

Using red yarn, sew i-cord in a snaking pattern along sausage.

Sew in ends.
