Hey, kids! Turn your collection of pebbles into a bunch of bees and beetles using craft paints. You can even add googly bug eyes! Then, once you’ve mastered the art, create all kinds of rad rock stars – including a group of vegie patch pals.
Rocky bees and beetles
Gather your supplies
• Smooth pebbles
• Water-based undercoat or gesso
• Water-based craft paints in black and white, plus extra colours of choice
• Paint brushes in various sizes
• Hot glue gun and glue sticks (optional)
• Googly eyes (optional)
Step 1 Using paintbrush, coat your pebble with undercoat or gesso. Let dry.
Step 2 Using paintbrush, coat pebble with 1 solid colour (say red, blue or yellow). Let dry.
Step 3 Add detail using black and white paint and a fine paintbrush – this is where you bring your cute character to life! Try painting a lady beetle or buzzing bee. Just make sure you let each paint colour dry before switching colours.
Step 4 You can paint circle-shaped eyes using white paint, then let dry and add a pupil with a dot of black paint. Otherwise, use hot glue to attach a pair of googly eyes. Let dry. Repeat Steps 1-4 to make as many rock pets as you desire.
Sit your rocky fellas on your desk – they make awesome paperweights!
Vegie patch pals
Once you’ve mastered the bugs, try your hand at crafting other mischievous characters. You’re only limited by your imagination! Paint pebbles to look like carrots, peas, tomatoes or strawberries – then use coloured craft felt and scissors to make details such as a carrot top or a pea hat. Stick felt details in place using hot glue.
Top tip! Add bright eyes and a cheeky grin! To do this, try using paint pens and markers in white and black to add detail to your pebble pals. Say cheese!
