Pet-friendly style hacks

Style for both you and your pooch. - by Laura Barry

Pet-friendly style hacks

Australia is a nation of pet lovers, with an estimated 62 per cent of households owning at least one pet. However, our beloved pooches can sometimes restrict our personal style thanks to shedding fur and leaving their toys everywhere. Here are three ways you can keep your home stylish while catering to all your pet’s needs.

Swap poisonous plants for pet-friendly fronds

Nothing makes more of a style statement than indoor plants, however many varieties are toxic to cats and dogs, so be sure to double check the toxic plants list on the Pet Poison Helpline website. Spider plants, Bamboo, the Boston Fern and true Palms are all safe for pets.

Hide fur with fur

Does your pet have a favourite place they like to sleep on the couch, or an unsightly bed you wish was more stylish? Try popping an animal hide, sheepskin or faux-fur blanket the same colour as their fur over the pet bed or their regular spot on the couch. Not only will it look stylish, but it’ll keep your critter warm and disguise the fur. If you go for real animal hides, they’re also durable.

We love this monochrome colour pallet of this room and how perfectly does that gorgeous hide complete the interiors?

Match their style with yours

Unfortunately, most pet bowls and accessories tend to come in bright colours, stainless steel or lightweight plastic. Instead, think about what would look best with your décor, such as food and water bowls made from ceramic in a home that is mostly white and bright; or stainless steel bowls set into timber frames for homes that have a Scandi vibe, or coloured bowls that match your cabinetry or walls.

Think about storage

There’s nothing worse than loving the look of a decluttered home, only to spy the tangle of leads, harnesses, pet carriers and kitty litter by the front door or tucked into the corner of your laundry. Instead, see if there is somewhere easily accessible in your home where all these items can be stored, or purchase stylish boxes or baskets where everything can be tucked away out of sight.
