Hydrochloric acid (see note, below); Berger Jet Dry AquaTread Satin in Colorbond Ironstone and Colorbond Surfmist
You’ll also need
Safety gear (see note below); chalk line; pencil; measuring tape; small paint bucket; wide flat paintbrush
Note Before using hydrochloric acid, refer to the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). This document outlines the safety procedures and gear required, including respiratory, eye, hand and body protection. Keep acid away from children and pets.
Step 1 Sweep and vacuum concrete. If concrete is heavily soiled, follow paint product directions to sufficiently decontaminate concrete before painting. Let dry.
Step 2 Wearing safety gear at all times, read and carefully follow product directions to dilute acid with water. Always add acid to water, never add water to acid.
Step 3 Following product directions, carefully apply acid solution to slab. After required time, thoroughly flush concrete with fresh water. Let dry (up to 1 week).
Step 4 Using chalk line, pencil and measuring tape, mark slab with 500 x 500mm grid at a 45° angle from one corner.
Step 5 Pour a little Surfmist into paint bucket. Paint required squares in chequerboard, keeping brush quite dry so a little concrete shows through. For a rustic look, don’t fuss about achieving perfect sharp lines at edges. Let dry. Wash tools.
Step 6 Pour a little Ironstone into paint bucket. Repeat method in Step 5 to paint necessary squares in the grid. Let dry thoroughly.
