The best things to see and do at Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show

The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS) is the ultimate festival for green-thumbs. Ranked among the top five flower shows in the world, the show really has something for everyone regardless of skill or age.

The festival showcases emerging lifestyle trends, floral displays and show gardens, while visitors are also able to attend masterclasses and demonstrations from a range of floral stylists, landscapers and industry experts.

Now in its 24th year, the show is welcoming some major changes. With a new naming partner – Lawn Solutions Australia – and a new charity partnership with Beyond Blue, the five day floral event is set to be a must for Aussies nationwide.

The festival is also an opportunity for retailers and small businesses within the flower, garden and landscape industries to showcase their wares in stalls that sell everything from bulbs to tools, trinkets and garden accessories.

This year, MIFGS runs from March 27 to 31 at the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens in Melbourne, Victoria.

Organisers predict that the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-inspired plant installation will be a crowd favourite, while kids are sure to enjoy the  brand new Kids Education Zone, where young gardeners can pot their own plants and try their hand at generating a water supply in the bicycle installation.

Other highlights of Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show 2019 include the custom-built Welcome Garden by Cycas Landscape Design’s Mark Browning, and an exclusive, one-night only party on the Friday night – Gardens by Twilight – with local craft beers, prosecco, rosé and even the worlds’ first non-alcoholic spirits, a gourmet food selection, musical performances and romantically lit gardens running late into the evening.

The ancient art of Ikebana will be brought to life by Japanese master Naohiro Kasuya, who is flying in direct from Tokyo’s Ichiyo Ikebana Floristry School. The RMIT Floral Design Competition is also worth a look as it features couture made from flowers, foliage and other plant life.
