Look after your lawn

Summer is peak time for looking after your lawn. As well as being the time when it’s growing the most, you’re also using it a lot more, so you want it to look and feel good. Here are some of the tools you’ll need to have the best lawn on the street.

Mower

While the mower seems like an obvious choice, no list would be complete without it. There is a range of different options to power your mower. Petrol is still a popular choice but the latest are battery-operated mowers. The large voltage batteries mean that they are just as powerful as a petrol mower without the hassle of having to get fuel. Plug in electric mowers are good if you only have a small patch of lawn.

Line Trimmer

Also known as the Whipper Snipper, the line trimmer is a great tool for taming a lawn that’s gotten out of control, finishing off the areas a mower can’t get to and quickly cutting the edges. Just like the mower, they’re available in petrol and battery-operated models.

Rotary Edger

To keep the edges of your lawn neat along paths and driveways, you’ll need an edger. The wheel on the tool runs along the hard surface while the cutting blade chops off any grass that has grown over it.

Hand Tools

Apart from the tools you probably have in your shed already, such as a rake and weeder, there are another couple of tools specifically designed for lawns. Aerators are pronged tools used to open up the soil to allow water and fertiliser to penetrate. Aerating is best done at the start of spring, right before the growing season starts. There are hand aerators or spiked sandals you strap to your feet so you can aerate as you walk! A hand-held fertiliser spreader makes sure your grass gets an even amount of fertiliser over the entire area.
