Local council introduces see-through bins

Part of waste reduction initiative - by Rebecca Lowrey Boyd
  • 20 Apr 2018

A local council in Perth has introduced transparent bins in a bid to get people thinking about what they throw out.

It’s part of Mindarie Regional Council’s waste-reduction campaign called “Face Your Waste”.

The clear bins will be trialled over a two-month period.

The council’s chief executive Gunther Hoppe said the bins are meant to raise awareness throughout the community.

“If you have lots of waste in your bin, we’d love people to have a conversation about reducing it,” Hoppe told ABC Radio Perth.

“Or if someone has a little bit of waste in the bin – we’d love people to ask their neighbour how they manage to get the waste so low.”

Combating landfill has become high on the agenda for the WA State Government.

"The State Government has set a target that by 2020, they want 65 per cent of the material that we generate in our household to be diverted away from landfill," he said.

"Currently we are at about 50 per cent."

20 select homes will have their green bins replaced with the transparent ones, and participation is optional.
