Unfortunately, there are common things everyone does that contribute to the feeling of chaos in your home.

Why your kitchen still feels messy after you’ve cleaned it

Here are seven reasons why your kitchen feels messy even though you just cleaned it – and how to fix it.

1. You use your fridge as a noticeboard

Although hanging important notices and happy memories on your fridge makes sense, it’s making your kitchen look messy. Instead, pick some of your favourite photos to hang on a wall in your home and create a dedicated spot for all those pesky bills that keep appearing in your letterbox.

2. You don’t have enough lighting

Dark lighting in the kitchen is another reason why your kitchen feels messy. One light in the centre of your kitchen needs to be more. Consider adding several recessed downlights to make the space nice and bright. And that’s to start with. Here are the different types of lights you’ll need and how to make them look great.

3. You’ve gone for open shelves

Proceed with caution if you want to use open shelves in your kitchen. Open shelves may look stylish and modern, but they can make it challenging to keep things organised. If you have your heart set on open shelves, stick to a theme and don’t overfill them.

4. Your benches are cluttered

Dirty cookbooks, cooking ingredients, and lots of appliances – these things take up bench space, making your kitchen look messy. Invest in adequate kitchen storage and give every item you use. It will instantly change the feel of your kitchen.

5. You leave your dirty sponges and soap bottles lying around

The kitchen sponge is one of the dirtiest items in your home, so don’t leave it lying around in plain sight. The key to a clutter-free kitchen is having a home for all your essential items. In this case, that home should be under your sink and away from everyone’s noses.

6. Cords are everywhere

If you’ve got lots of appliances on your countertop, you’ve got lots of cords. Invest in some cord organisation tools to help reduce the clutter in your kitchen.

7. Dirty dishes are piling up in the sink

Dirty dishes piling up in the sink makes your kitchen feel messier because it is messier. Remember: doing the dishes won’t take as long as you think it will. So stop thinking about it and just do it.
