Saving for a fantastic overseas holiday filled with sight-seeing and gorgeous photos is the goal for many Australians, both young and old. However, saving pennies shouldn’t’ stop the moment you board the plane. There are numerous ways you can continue to save money while you enjoy your holiday, and still come home with a few dollars to spare.
Travel doesn’t need to be expensive, but it does take research, planning and a little forethought to make the most of your holiday without breaking the budget.
1. Think frugally
Even if you’ve set yourself a savings target of $5000, and budgeted to spend that entire amount, it doesn’t mean you have to spend the entire $5000. Think about ways you can save money, such as getting early bird deals on flights and accommodation, travelling in off-season, and purchasing some of your meals from supermarkets, markets or cafes to save money on food costs, rather than heading to a restaurant for every meal.
2. Travel according to the sales
While many people have a bucket list, or prioritise the locations, countries or cities they wish to visit, it can save you heaps of money if you travel according to the locations that are on sale. Further to that, never settle for the first price you find. Search multiple websites such as Skyscanner, Expedia, Tripadvisor, etc, and visit multiple travel agents. The more flexible you are with the dates and location of travel, the more money you can save. Be open-minded.
3. Sign up for walking tours
The best way to explore a new city is usually by foot, and there are often free walking tours in most cities. While most tour guides will expect a tip, a tip is usually significantly cheaper than paying a full fee for a large commercial tour. It’s also an excellent way to orient yourself in a new city once you’ve arrived, and an opportunity to ask any burning questions you might have about the local culture.
4. Rethink your meals
One of the best ways to reduce your holiday costs is by being smart with your meals. If you’re staying at a hotel, make a booking that includes breakfast. If you’re doing Airbnb, pop to the local supermarket and stock up with breakfast and snacks that you can make in the morning and pack for your adventures later in the day. Utilise markets and assemble your own food, and avoid restaurants located in tourist traps, as they’ll always charge more. You’re better off hunting down lesser known restaurants and cafes for better food at a more affordable price point.
5. Be money smart
Withdrawing money while abroad can cost you thanks to hefty fees. Although using a debit or credit card can make the fees less, Skyscanner recommends taking out larger sums of cash so you’re charged fees less frequently. Keep an eye on the fluctuating exchange rates before you travel and order your currency in advance to get the best deal. This way you’ll also avoid the high commission at the airport exchange desk.
6. Don’t overpack
Excess luggage fees can quickly suck up money from the budget, Make sure you double check your weight allowance before you depart on your trip, and only take the bare essentials. Only pack clothes that can be mixed and matched, and cater to a variety of weather condition, or can be layered.
