Picture this. The sun is rising, the birds are chirping, Edvard Grieg’s ‘Morning Mood’ is the soundtrack. You sit down to your piping hot cuppa as the sun burns away the mist, revealing… your neighbour totally starkers tending to their backyard gardening chores! Suddenly the birds flee, the record skips and your brew has gone cold. This is not a regular Saturday morning sight, surely? Before you pinch yourself again (and again) to check if you’re dreaming, trust us – you’re not. The first Saturday in May marks World Naked Gardening Day.
Yep, that’s right! It’s the annual, international event designed for green thumbs to expose their love of gardening. While the event has a history linked to a movement that promotes acceptance of the human body in all its fabulous forms, the day is intended to be non-political, lighthearted and funny. So, strip off and join the neighbours – armed with your best puns – and reconnect with the natural environment.
That said, safety comes first, so slip on the work boots, gloves and hat, and lather up with plenty of sun cream before you hit the backyard in the buff. Oh, and maybe avoid using the power tools, too.
“World Naked Gardening Day is a bit of light-hearted fun. We’re encouraging people to give it a go as a quirky way to get them in their gardens without dirty laundry to wash afterwards,” says Angie Thomas, Horticulture Consultant to Yates.
Yates’ top tips for World Naked Gardening:
- Watch out for ants and insects and check where you’re sitting on the day
- If a sunny day is forecasted in your local area, don’t forget to wear sunscreen
- According to the event founders, it’s fine to wear a hat for sun protection, gardening gloves to protect your hat and shoes if you have sensitive feet
- Be careful with any gardening tools especially the secateurs – you don’t want to forget where you left them!
- Consider holding off on mowing your lawn to avoid any awkward conversations with neighbours
- Watch out for prickles on rose bushes
Additionally, they’re calling on naked gardeners to join them on Facebook to share some “tasteful photos”.
