Packing up your kitchen can be one of the more tedious jobs when moving house, but unpacking it is the perfect opportunity to create the kitchen of your dreams. Get off to a great start and tick off these tasks before you unpack a single thing.

1. Clean everything

The previous owner might have done a thorough exit clean, but this is the one chance you’ll get to ensure everything is how you want it. Get up on a ladder and clean over the back of cupboards. More than likely you’ll find a few forgotten items – or pests. Wipe down all of the shelves and surfaces.

2. Paint

If you’re thinking of painting your kitchen, or even touching up a few bits, do it before you unpack. It will be easier to access everything without moving all of your stuff or covering it with drop sheets.

3. Get organised

Now is the one opportunity to create a calm and organised space. Grab a packet of post-it notes and label all of the shelves and drawers so everything has a new home. Think about how you work in the kitchen and which things you need easy access to, and plan accordingly.

4. Line up

If you like the look of lined shelves, grab a measuring tape so you can cut the lining paper to the exact size.

5. Measure up

Before you put away all of your large bottles and vases, measure up. You’ll find it easier if you adjust the shelves to the correct height before it’s full of your stuff.

6. Create a maybe box

Not sure about some of your items, but not quite ready to part with them? Create a ‘maybe box’ and reconsider the contents in around six months. If you haven’t needed anything in the box, take it all to charity.
