If you feel like giving your doggo a special treat for Easter, steer clear of hot cross buns.
According to one Queensland vet, the traditional Easter treat could potentially kill your dog.
Dr Emily Cook from the Animal Referral Hospital warns that sultanas in hot cross buns can cause serious kidney problems.
“Even a small amount of grapes and raisins can be lethal to dogs as it can cause acute kidney failure. While they don’t know what the toxic substance in grapes is, scientists do agree that it is both the flesh and the skin that is poisonous to dogs,” the Brisbane animal hospital stated on their Facebook page.
One dog Ellie was brought in to the hospital by her owners after she ate an entire loaf of raisin bread.
“We helped Ellie to bring up the contents of her stomach and monitored the function of her kidneys through blood tests,” the Animal Referral Hospital stated.
“She was placed on a drip for 24 hours to help rebalance her body fluids and was given activated charcoal, which traps toxins and chemicals in the body allowing them to be flushed out and not reabsorbed.”
