Kombucha isn’t the health drink you think it is

You’re wasting money on a sub-par product.

Kombucha has become the health drink du jour. Touted as being the holy grail for improving gut health and good bacteria, kombucha is now so much more than a weird drink your hippy aunt used to cook up.

Unfortunately, due to the widespread popularity of this fermented drink, mass manufacturers have jumped on the wellness train to ride the lucrative sales opportunity, and have diluted the efficacy of the drink in the process.

Kombucha is made from a symbiotic culture of bacteria and a yeast called scoby. Unfortunately, some large-scale manufacturers of the drink are pasteurising it – removing all the probiotic qualities that make it good for gut health.

That means consumers are really just buying a fizzy drink that tastes like kombucha, but has none of the health benefits.

Food labelling laws in Australia don’t require manufacturers to declare how much actual kombucha is in a bottle or if the product has been pasteurised, so consumers are none the wiser.
