Sydneysiders may be familiar with the Ikea buy-back scheme that was trialled for a year at the Tempe store in Sydney, which saw 1,600 pieces of furniture returned and re-sold. However, Ikea have now announced that the one-off trial was successful, and the scheme will now be rolled out all across Australia.
That means all Australians can now return their old and used Ikea furniture to an Ikea store close to them, and the customer will receive an Ikea gift voucher for their pre-loved furniture in exchange. The furniture will then go one to be resold to the wider public at a bargain price.
The initiative aims to save 15,000 pieces of furniture from landfill each year, and create a more sustainable future by creating a circular life cycle for Ikea furniture.
The concept, that was introduced to IKEA Tempe by IKEA Sales Manager, David Hawthorn, is also being adopted by IKEA stores throughout the world. He says, “The reception for the buy-back scheme in Tempe has been so positive. To see this service now being offered to IKEA customers nationally, and maybe one day all around the world, is incredible and beyond what I could have imagined.”
Kate Ringvall, Sustainability Business Partner, IKEA Australia says, “We’re proud to be the first home furnishing retailer in the country to launch a service of this nature. Improving the demand for recycling and promoting zero waste in Australia is our goal. This initiative goes beyond social responsibility and comes down to educating and helping Australians live a more sustainable life at home.”
Customers can find out the buy-back value of their piece of furniture by visiting www.ikea.com.au/buyback and following the steps online. The value is redeemable in the form of an IKEA voucher. To qualify for the scheme, your IKEA product needs to be complete and unmodified, returned clean and fully assembled. The furniture will then be resold to a new home via the As-Is department and, in partnership with GoGet, IKEA furniture buy-back customers can sign up for free and access up to 20% off GoGet bookings to make it easier to return furniture.
