How to make money on eBay

What to sell and how to list it.

The average Australian is usually sitting on a couple thousand dollars’ worth of unwanted, unused stuff. From clothing and blu-rays to furniture and collectibles, cleansing our homes of those pre-loved items can be a great way to make a little extra cash. One way to sell your items is eBay, a shopping website that gets 11 million visitors a month and has been in Australia for 18 years, meaning it’s one of the best and most reliable ways to sell your items, and get the most eyeballs on your listing.

What you should sell on eBay

While household items will often sell online at a discounted price, look for items like appliances, furnishings and tech, the ‘essentials’ every household needs, as well as collectables and timeless vintage pieces to cash in on higher returns. DVDs, video games, mobiles phones and women’s fashion are some of the most popular items flying off eBay’s virtual shelves. Remember, the more reputable the brand, the higher the price you’ll fetch. Timing is important, too. For example, when new phones launch we usually see more people on the lookout for a new phone.

Get it listed

Use eBay’s QuickList is a great tool for those new to the online selling space. Sellers simply select their item from our pre-filled templates, auto populating details such as brand, size and colour. No legwork necessary.

Include details

Include at least 3 to 12 great images when selling your items. Don’t be afraid to showcase every angle including any unique details and any defects. When it comes to taking photos, natural light works best and a white background helps keep the shot looking clean.

Write a sales pitch

The description of an item is your sales pitch and your chance to highlight why your item is better than other options online. Try to describe your item as if there were no images, with a detailed and honest explanation of the product.

Ship it off faster

Make the most of the QuickList feature to get pricing and shipping recommendations to save you time and hassle, and utilize the eBay postage label printing platform so you can print labels from the comfort of your couch.
