With age comes experience, knowledge and wisdom, but confidence isn’t always a part of the package. Yes, there are older women who rise above self-doubt and sieve the day, starting new hobbies, changing careers or doing things they’ve always wanted to do. So how can you join their ranks, build confidence and enjoy more of what life has to offer?

Here are 4 simple ways to start celebrating the woman you are.

1. Choose your friends

Spend time with people who support you, laugh with you and are there when you need them. If you walk away feeling good they’re keepers but if you leave feeling less than or drained their time has come. If you’re missing out on nurturing, well-meaning friends look to your local community for activities or groups involved with things you’re interested in or start your own and explore new horizons. It’s time to spread your wings.

2. Mind your self-talk

Everyone does it, in fact it’s usually pretty constant for most people, self-talk that is. But how much of it is good stuff? Very little. Catch yourself thinking negative, mean thoughts and challenge them. Ask yourself if they’re based on any sound logic or are they habitual put downs that keep you small? Good friends don’t care if your hair needs a cut or if your tummy isn’t flat. They love you for who you so do the same for yourself.

3. Practice gratitude

Life gets busy, time races by and before you know it another day has slipped by. Meanwhile the sun shines, the water flows and your coffee was delicious but you drank it without noticing. When you’re present and appreciate the good things in your life your spirits are instantly lifted. It also makes tasks feel less daunting and others more pleasurable. Reasons to be grateful are all around, big and small, and the more you notice the more there are.

4. Dress to suit yourself

Wearing clothes that feel right for you sets you up for a good day. It could be a particular style, shape or colour you find flattering and feel most comfortable in. So pull out those special pieces and wear them. Work out what it you love and buy clothes with a similar look or feel. Don’t try to copy others, be inspired by them. Over time you’ll develop your own unique style and have a wardrobe full of clothes that lift your spirits.
