Travelling over Christmas? How to book the cheapest flights

Skyscanner reveal the cheapest time to book Christmas flights

As anyone who lives far from their family can attest, visiting friends and relatives who live interstate – or overseas – can be a costly affair during December and the Christmas period. Unfortunately, Christmas is just one of those times many of us are required to fly, and the airlines tend to take full advantage of our desperation to enjoy those few public holidays of freedom with our families.

Fortunately, Skyscanner has crunched the numbers and analysed the data to determine what month is the best time to book Christmas flights on the cheap. As it turns out, August is the best time of the year to book air travel in December. Skyscanner data from the past two years revealed that international airfares booked in August for Christmas departures were 10% cheaper than flights booked in November. In fact, the demand for Christmas time flights peaks in November, making it the most expensive time to book flights departing in December.

“While it may seem early to be thinking about your Christmas travel plans, it really does pay to plan ahead.”

“While it may seem early to be thinking about your Christmas travel plans, it really does pay to plan ahead and book your airfares in August where data suggests prices are more wallet friendly,” says Skyscanner travel expert, Emily Cairns.

“We know from Skyscanner data that December is the most expensive month to fly, so we encourage travellers who are keen to travel at that time to take advantage and book in advance to help them pocket more savings during the silly season.”

So, if you’re planning to book flights over Christmas, now is the best time to book, and November is the worst.
