We’ve all had our fair share of makeup blunders, ad many of them took place in our early teens when we experimented with blue eyeshadow and too much eyeliner. However, there’s a few little tips and tricks that only a makeup artist knows about makeup application, so we spoke to Sarah Tammer, makeup artist to Australian supermodel and LUMA founder, Jess Hart, about the top 5 beauty blunders we all make, and how to fix them.
1. Harsh eyebrows
“I’m not a fan of overly shaped, harshly filled-in or obviously tattooed brows,” says Sarah. “I think it can be overpowering and make the face look too severe. I absolutely love natural brows that compliment and frame the face.”
2. Dehydrated skin
“Hydrated skin is youthful and healthy looking. If foundation is applied to dry, dehydrated skin it can be very aging and unflattering, especially if the foundation is a matte formula or finished with too much powder,” says Sarah. “Hydrate from the inside out with plenty of water, green juice, herbal tea and a healthy diet. Use quality skin care to prepare the skin before applying foundation.”
3. Using too much metallic eyeshadow
“Metallic eye shadow on mature eyelids can enhances wrinkles and make lids look extra crepe-like” says Sarah. “Matte shadows in natural tones, like taupe or warm browns, are much more flattering, or no eye shadow at all. I find the older I get, less makeup is more youthful and modern.”
4. Fake tan
“I don’t understand the obsession with fake tan, be natural and happy with the skin you’re in,” says Sarah. “If you absolutely must fake tan find an expert to apply the tan and be sure to select a shade that suits your skin tone. Go natural and subtle and follow the preparation and maintenance instructions.”
5. Using the wrong foundation
“Using the wrong shade or texture of foundation doesn’t look good,” says Sarah. “When purchasing a new foundation I recommend going in to the store with clean, well-prepped skin and trying a few different formulas on to find the one that suits best. Be sure to test in good lighting, even if you have to step out of the store and check in daylight, and ask for some samples to try on at home.”
