The next essential stitch you need to learn is how to purl stitch. Follow our four step-by-step instructions for beginners, and you will master the purl stitch in no time.

What is a purl stitch?

A purl stitch is the opposite of a knit stitch. The purl stitch is formed the same way as a knit stitch, only the needle is inserted from back to front, and the yarn is in front instead of behind.

What does a purl stitch look like in knitting?

It’s easy to tell the difference between a purl row and a knit row. A knit stitch looks like a little ‘V’. At the same time, a purl row will look like little rows of bumps.

Follow our simple steps for beginners.

STEP 1

HOW TO PURL KNITTING FOR BEGINNERS

Once you’ve chosen the right knitting needles, hold your needle with all the stitches on in your left hand and ensuring that the yarn is at the front of your work, insert the right-hand needle down through the front loop of your first stitch as shown.

STEP 2

HOW TO PURL KNITTING

Wind the yarn around the tip of the right hand needle from right to left in an anticlockwise motion, constantly keeping a slight tension on the yarn.

Now slip the right hand needle back through the stitch, ensuring you catch the yarn that you’ve already wound around the needle. This creates a stitch on your right-hand needle.

STEP 4

HOW TO PURL

Pushing the point of the right-hand needle a little further through the stitch you’ve just created, pull the original loop up and off the left-hand needle. That’s your first purl stitch! Repeat Steps 1-4 across the row.

How to cast on knitting
