Arrange your flowers like a pro with this simple trick – tape a grid of sticky tape across the mouth of a wide glass or ceramic vase to give flower stems extra support.

For you to note

Although sticky tape has been used here to create the grid, you can use floral tape which is a very sticky cloth-based, plastic-covered waterproof tape.

The final results.
Strip the sedum of their leaves to make it easier to pass the stems through the taped grid and to lessen bacteria in the water.

Gather your supplies

  • Wide-mouth glass or ceramic vase
  • Sticky tape
  • Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ flowers
  • Cuttings of Pieris japonica shrub
  • Secateurs or kitchen shears
  • 1 tsp sugar (flower food optional)

Here’s how

Step 1

Working around the top, tape around outer lip of vase. This creates a place for the ends of the grid tape to be attached to.

Step 2

Step 2

Pour water into the vase to desired level. Add sugar or optional flower food. Make sure exterior of vase is dry before continuing. Cut strips of tape then, allowing for intervals of about 4-5cm apart, place each strip across vase, making sure all run in the same direction.

To create the grid, place strips of tape in the opposite direction. To secure the grid in place, stick the tape around the lip of the vase.

Step 4

Step 4

Strip leaves from Sedum flowers and Pieris. Cut the stems of Sedum flowers to the same height and at an angle so they are able to absorb water, as well as nutrients from the sugar or flower food additive.

Start by arranging the Sedum flowers around the perimeter of your vase. Make sure they hang over the vase slightly to conceal the sticky tape around the lip. Then continue to fill in towards the centre. The tape grid will help keep all stems in place. Poke Pieris stems here and there around and within the arrangement to finish.

The final results.

The impact of a mass of sedum heads with subtle variations in colour is immediate while the drooping pieris are like tassels.
