Coles is making a giant leap forward in delivering groceries thanks to drones.

From next week, the supermarket giant will roll out an Australian first “store-to-door” drone delivery service with Google’s delivery service Wing.

And it’s coming to shoppers at the Gold Coast from November 2.

Specifically, customers in the Gold Coast suburbs of Ormeau, Ormeau Hills, and Yatala can have their groceries delivered by drone. Coles is hoping to expand to nearby suburbs soon.

Products that can be delivered by drone include essential items like bread, fruit and veg, frozen meals and other household essentials.

Have groceries delivered ‘in minutes’

Coles head of network development and customer delivery James Geddes said they are delighted to be providing this service to customers.

“The service will provide a convenient and effective way of delivering everyday essentials to our customers’ homes in a matter of minutes,” he said.

“Customers can now get those urgent items they need in a hurry, delivered by drone, directly from the local Coles Ormeau Village store. Whether they’ve forgotten to pick up a loaf of bread or fresh milk during their weekly shop or are missing an ingredient for dinner-time meal prep or school lunches, they can now get those products delivered quickly, without having to drive to the store.”

Most sustainable supermarket

The use of drones also helps with the supermarket giant’s plan to become more sustainable and reduce the number of trucks on the road.

“This new service reinforces our commitment to enhancing the way our customers shop with Coles by delivering anytime, anywhere, anyhow shopping, while supporting our ambition to be Australia’s most sustainable supermarket by continuing to reduce the number of trucks on the road.”

The program comes after Coles launched a similar service in Canberra in March where more than 500 deliveries were made via drone.

Coles isn’t the only business to take advantage of drone deliveries. KFC conducted its own trial earlier this year.
