Impulse buying is something we’re all guilty of. You see something in Kmart, and despite your better judgement, you know it’s coming home with you.

Of course, there’s a very handy hack for that.

Morgan Smith is a content creator. She has developed a technique to help anyone overcome impulse buying or what she calls “Target trance”.

What is the Target trance?

The Target trance, according to Morgan, is when you buy something in-store that has been beautifully styled, but then when you get it home, it doesn’t look as nice.

“It frustrated me so much when I used to pull out my holiday storage containers and not like some of the decor that was only a year or two old,” says Morgan in a post on Instagram. “The impulse buying had to stop. It was wasteful, so I started ‘taking it to the trash.’”

In a nutshell, if Morgan sees something in a shop she likes, before buying it she takes it to the bin aisle to look at it without any styling around it.

In the video, Morgan takes a vase she thought looked gorgeous, surrounded by beautiful foliage. But in the trash aisle, she realised “it looked like a weird donut.”

But if she likes something next to a garbage bin, she knows it’s a keeper.

“Omg, genius”

Her followers loved this handy tip, with many calling Morgan a genius.

Another commenter said: “It’s the lighting. That’s a trick we were taught in retail.”

“I’ve learned more useful shit on IG than I did in 8 years of higher education,” said another person.

“Omg, genius. But what’s the antique/thrift store equivalent of the trash can aisle,” asked another.

While this tip was filmed in Target, it works in larger stores like Kmart too.

Just don’t forget to put your unwanted items back.
