Knitted homes sweet home
Gather your supplies:
40cm linen; assorted fabric scraps; ricrac; assorted felt balls and felt circles; buttons; pink felt for snow capping; embroidery thread; Vliesofix; fibrefill; tracing paper; general sewing supplies; sewing machine
Note: To make smaller house, enlarge Home Sweet Home Diagram (below) to 300%. Extend wall height by 5cm. Follow Steps 1-7 (below) and use picture as a guide to decorate.
Here's how...
Step 1 Using a photocopier, enlarge Home Sweet Home Diagram (right) to 400%, then 125%. From linen, cut 1 Roof, 2 Sides and 1 Base. Following manufacturer’s instructions, iron Vliesofix to wrong side of fabric scraps, and felt for snow capping. From fabric scraps, cut 6 windows, 4 sets of cur tains, 1 door and 2 candy canes. Cut four 16cm pieces of ricrac.
Step 2 Stitch windows, door, candy canes and trims to the linen pieces, using the Home Sweet Home Diagram (below) and picture as a guide.
Step 3 Machine stitch ricrac to linen, through centre. For windows with curtains, place curtains on top of window square and stitch 5mm in from top and bottom. For plain windows, stitch through middle, top to bottom, then through middle again, side to side. For door, stitch 5mm in on 4 sides.
Step 4 For candy canes, make one line of stitching through centre from top to bottom. Attach buttons and felt. For the side with candy canes and door, sew 4 felt circles below the ricrac with a simple cross stitch in the centre of each, using embroidery thread.
Step 5 Decorate back of house with running stitch, felt balls and felt to create flowers.
Step 6 For other 2 sides, use buttons, felt and felt balls to create flowers around base. Use a running stitch for stems and leaves, then sew on a button or felt to make flowers. To attach felt snow, fold linen roof piece in half, then pin felt in place so it sits over fold. Sew in place with running stitch.
Step 7 To assemble house, with right sides together, machine stitch 1 side of house to roof piece (seam allowance on diagram). Repeat for other side. With house still inside-out, stitch base to house, leaving an opening for turning. Turn out. Stuff with fibrefill. Shape sides and bottom and slip-stitch opening closed.
