Want to introduce your kids to the magical world of plants? This adorable fairyland should do the trick! Set up in a large container, it includes all a good pixie needs – mini toadstools, a friendly squirrel, secret pathways and havens covered in lush ‘vines’. Once your new fantasia is designed, add a few toy fairies until the real ones move in.
Gather your supplies
• Half wine barrel or large container
• Selection of low-growing plants (we used blue star creeper, Corsican mint, African violet, mini cyclamen, viola, Ceropegia woodii)
You'll also need
Craft glue; potting mix; lanterns; white sand; mini gate; mini fence; small decorations, to suit; decorative pebbles; drill with drill bit (optional)
Ensure your barrel has adequate drainage. If it doesn’t, drill at least 4 large, equally spaced holes in base. Fill barrel with potting mix until it’s 100mm shy of lip.
Decide on layout of your fairyland. Mark out pathways with sand and put larger decorations, such as lanterns, in place.
Pot larger plants (mini cyclamen and African violet) in pockets around edges of barrel, then plant groundcovers (Corsican mint and blue star creeper) around larger plants and paths. Wrap Ceropegia woodii around lanterns for a charming forest feel.
Glue smaller ornaments in place, then stick pebbles in sand to create pathways. Water regularly and watch your fantasy land flourish!
