Have an outdoor area, big or small, consider a gorgeous hanging basket. Just like a fabulous hamper of floral fun, go the extra step and get the kids involved in the process. They’ll love helping out, picking the plants and learning all about gardening, too.
Gather your supplies
Wire-framed hanging basket
Thin plastic (a shopping bag is suitable)
Premium-grade potting mix
Selection of suitable plants (potted colour such as pansy, polyanthus, impatiens, begonias, geraniums, fuchsias and spilling plants such as ivy). See Note,
Slow-release fertiliser (optional)
Note: For best results, choose plants that require the same level of watering and environmental conditions.
Place your chosen wire-framed hanging basket on your work surface. Line the basket with coconut fibre. Trim coconut fibre with garden scissors, if necessary.
Place plastic inside basket. Cut plastic to fit, just shy of top edges of basket (so it’s not visible). Remove plastic from basket, and poke a few small drainage holes in centre of plastic with scissors. Place plastic back in basket.
Wearing gloves, add a few handfuls of potting mix to basket, enough to fill about 1/3 of basket.
While plants are still in pots, arrange them inside the basket until happy with the look. Add more potting mix if you need to raise them slightly higher.
Remove plants from plastic pots. Loosen roots with trowel, then position plants in basket.
Fill around plants with more potting mix. Use your hands to gently compact potting mix around base of each plant.
Following product directions, add a small amount of slow-release fertiliser, if using.
Water basket every day and it will bring pleasure to the recipient for months to come.
