But for some items, being cleaned once a week isn’t enough. Here are five items that should be given a daily once over.
Don’t leave your dishes out overnight. Either hand wash them or put them in the dishwasher. Leftover food attracts cockroaches and other rodents.
Speaking to 720 ABC Perth, Associate Professor Barbara Mullan from Curtin University's school of psychology said leaving your dishes out over night is how germs can spread.
"Ultimately if you leave dirty dishes around and there are people in the house, and possibly animals, they are likely to spread bacteria around," she said.
"Bacteria will stay alive on surfaces, even clean surfaces, for up to four days.
"So on dishes that have contamination like food particles, bacteria can stay alive for a very long time."
2. Bathroom sink
If neglected, what could have been a simple chore can turn into a bigger one, with blobs of toothpaste and who knows what else building up? Take a couple of minutes to clean your bathroom sink daily.
3. Kitchen bench
If you’re cooking daily, then this won’t be a problem. However, keep in mind that experts say the germiest bench areas are around the kitchen sink as people tend to leave dirty dish rags with food particles lying around.
4. The kitchen floor
There’s no need to drag out the mop and bucket every night, but a quick sweep of the kitchen floor will make sure any food scraps aren’t left to rot.
5. Shower walls
Keep a squeegee in the shower and give the walls a wipe down once are you finished. Drying your walls prevents mould and other nasties from building up.
