Italy: Rome cracking down on tourists sitting and eating near fountains
Do not sit on a fountain. Do not eat near the fountains and definitely don’t take a dip in them.
This is the new travel warning out of Italy after officials announced tourists would face fines for breaching any of the above.
Rome’s Mayor Virginia Raggi said an order has been signed which aims to protect around 40 fountains prone to vandalism.
“Everyone must respect Rome’s beauty,” Raggi said.
He added, “Most importantly, Rome’s (municipal) police have been tasked with monitoring these sites with ever more scrutiny. We have to protect our city, decorum is important.”
Fines for sitting, eating or taking a dip in a fountain start at 40 euros ($60) and reach 240 euros ($355).
The crackdown comes after a man was caught swimming naked in Rome's Trevi Fountain in April.
