How to paint your laminate cabinetry

Revamping your kitchen is just a coat of paint away! - by Aaron Clayton
  • 27 Dec 2017
How to paint your laminate cabinetry

Just sand, prime and paint your way to a new look when retro-coloured laminate on your kitchen doors and drawers no longer floats your boat and a full redo isn’t in your budget.

Gather your supplies

••Dulux Precision Maximum Strength Adhesion Primer

••Dulux Aquanamel Semi Gloss in White Verdict Quarter

You’ll also need

Drop sheets; screwdriver; allpurpose filler (optional); fine-grit sandpaper; sanding block; clean cloth; good-quality painter’s tape (optional); paint tray; paintbrush; mini paint roller; pencil; handles (optional); drill and bits (optional)

For you to note

• Make any necessary repairs to doors and drawers before painting.

• This paint process isn’t suitable for benchtops or flooring.

• Always read product instructions.

• When using power tools, wear all safety gear required and refer to your product instructions.

Here’s how

STEP 1 Spread out drop sheets. Using screwdriver, unscrew handles from doors and drawers. Reserve handles and screws for later, if reusing.

STEP 2 If using new handles that differ in size from old ones, plug old holes with filler. Let dry.

STEP 3 Using sandpaper wrapped around sanding block, lightly sand surfaces to be painted. Wipe away dust with cloth and take drop sheets outside to shake off dust.

STEP 4 Stick tape to surfaces you don’t wish to paint, such as along walls.

STEP 5 Pour primer into tray. Use brush around edges and roller to fill body of surfaces. Let dry. Clean painting tools.

STEP 6 Pour paint into tray. Use brush to cut in around edges and roller to fill body of surfaces. Let dry.

STEP 7 Repeat Step 6 for second coat. Let dry. Remove painter’s tape, if used.

STEP 8 Refit old handles using screwdriver. If using new handles, mark positions, drill holes and fit with screwdriver.
