How to protect your home and family from mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are an unfortunate part of summer of Australia, and not only do they leave behind an itchy bump when they bite you, but in some parts of Australia they are also carriers of various illnesses.

Here are five easy and effective ways you can mozzie-proof your home and reduce the risk of you and your family being bitten during the sunny season.

1. Invest in screens

Installing flyscreens and other mesh covers for windows, door, vents and chimneys is one of the best ways to stop mosquitoes getting into your home.

2. Use repellent on both you and your home

If you’re hanging around outside it’ always good to give yourself a quick spray with bug repellent, however it’s a great idea to spray you home too. Use an insect-repelling aerosol to spray in the dark nooks and crevices of your home such as under the furniture, in the cupboards, behind curtains and other hiding areas.

3. Go old school

If you enjoy sitting on the verandah or deck then burning a mosquito coil outdoors is a good way to keep the bugs out of your immediate area. There are also plug-in ‘mosquito-zappers’ that can be hung in outdoor areas.

4. Remove potential mosquito havens

Mosquitoes can breed in even the smallest amount of water so it’s important that you remove all stagnant water from sitting in your garden or around your property. It’s also a good idea to clean up around your property and pack away or remove any items, such as trailers, wheelbarrows, toys, pools, boats, etc, where water can pool after rainfall. Keep lawns and gardens trimmed and maintained.

5. Go au natural

Use plants to naturally repel mosquitoes and flies from your home. Citronella geranium, Rosemary, Basil, Lavender and Marigolds all repel flies and mosquitoes.
