How to make a stone path
Better Homes and Gardens

More than just a practical route through the garden (or to your clothesline), paths can become features, too. They can make the journey just as important as the destination. All you need to do is choose pavers in harmony with the look of your home and surround them with suitable plants. Groundcovers lend themselves to this type of planting because they are hardy, low-growing and spread easily. As for paving, if you are going for a contemporary feel, choose structured pavers, but for a more relaxed, informal look, sawn sandstone flagging is an ideal choice.

Gather your supplies
• Mixed sizes of sawn sandstone flagging
• River sand
• Garden soil
• Fine mulch
• Selection of groundcover plants

You’ll also need
Rake; shovel; wheelbarrow

Here's how

Step 1 Prepare site by removing any vegetation, mulch and spongy soil with shovel. Rake area level, so sandstone flagging will sit flat.

Step 2 To create a base for paving, shovel and spread 20-30mm of river sand evenly over the area.

Step 3 Position flagging along pathway, ensuring you leave room between pavers for plantings.

Step 4 Once all flagging is in place, fill in gaps with good-quality garden soil, using back of rake to help spread soil, if needed.

Step 5 Decide on arrangement of plants by placing them around site until you are happy with your design. You can try grouping plants to create a patchwork effect. Once finished, plant up, mulch and water well.
