How to make a mood board

A must-have decorating tool. - by Laura Barry

How to make a mood board

Before you start painting, putting up wallpaper, tearing down light fixtures or making any other drastic cosmetic changes to your home, you should sit down and make a mood board. A mood board is the perfect opportunity to lay paint chips, fabric swatches, tiles and metallic finishes against each other to ensure everything looks looks great together. This will solve any end-of-project regrets when you realise  the olive-green walls clash hideously with the orange in the wallpaper.

What you will need:

A corkboard that can be hung

Board pins

Printed pictures or magazine cuttings for room inspiration

Fabric swatches

Paint chips

Wallpaper samples

How to make a mood board:

Step 1: Collect some pictures from magazines, or images you have printed from online that are of rooms or homes that inspire you, and have the same look that you are trying to achieve in your home.

Step 2: Collect paint chips in the colours you envision you will use in the room, fabric swatches of the colours you plan to use in furniture, rugs, curtains, carpet or bed linen – depending on the room you are decorating.

Step 3: If you can, collect small samples of any tiles or metallic hardware you envision using in the room.

Step 4: Lay the images in central positions on your corkboard, then arrange the chips, fabric and other samples around the images in a way that looks and feels pretty to you.

Step 5: Pin everything down using the board pins. Once everything is attached, you should now have a good idea of how the colours and textures will work against each other, and if the items you have selected look similar to those in the inspiration pictures you chose.

Step 6: Put the mood board in a prominent location in the room you wish to redecorate to get a good feel of how the project would look once complete. If there are anything you don’t think actually works, swap it out until you find the right combination to suit your project.
