How to make a clay dish in four easy steps

Mimic the magical swirled look of marble with this decorative dish.

Step. 1

clay dish

Knead 4 or 5 shades of polymer clay (see page 166), then roll out 12.5mm-dia. rods of each colour. Lay the rods in desired order, twist together then fold rods in half.

Step. 2

clay dish

Twist and fold clay again. Form clay into a ball, then roll out to 12.5mm thick. STEP 3 Lay a square dish on top and cut clay even with dish edges.

Lay a square dish on top and cut clay even with dish edges.

Step. 4

Place clay inside an oven-safe glass bowl, allowing corners to curve up sightly along the sides. Bake clay in bowl, according to clay manufacturer’s instructions. Allow to cool, then remove dish from bowl. To smooth the corners of the dish, dampen and sand corners lightly. Let dry.
