How to keep your bedroom warm this winter

Without the use of heaters. - by Laura Barry

How to keep your bedroom warm this winter

Winter is a time for snuggling up at home and enjoying a cosy bed. However, it’s also a season for higher electricity and heating bills – which no one enjoys.

However, you can keep your house feeling warm and snug without turning on the heater as often. It just comes down to some clever decorating tricks and layering techniques.

1. Keep the necessities nearby

Keep a pretty basket packed with slippers, woolly socks, a dressing gown and a cuddly throw blanket and put it in an easily accessible location. This way the kids can grab their slippers or extra layers as they’re leaving the room, and you’ll be cosy between bed and breakfast.

2. Layer up

Now is the time to be adding a cold-weather duvet to the bed, an extra blanket and even an additional throw rug on top. The extra layers will ensure you feel warm all night long. Pick materials such as organic cotton and linen, and flannel sheets and wool.

3. Do a draught-check

Bow is the time to check the seals on windows and doors, and identify where any cold gusts of wind might whisper through the cracks. Get seals replaced and gaps filled before the morning frosts roll in.

4. Protect your toes

If you live in a home with hardwood or tiled floors, winter is the time to invest in a plush rug. A rug with a high pile or made from faux fur placed next to the bd will keep your toes warm when you wake up this winter.

5. Use a hot water bottle

It might be old fashioned, but the humble hot water bottle can keep you toasty throughout even the coldest nights. Pop one in the bed to warm it up, and you’ll sleep like a baby.

6. Window dressing

Protect your room from cold draughts and stop the heat from escaping out the windows by hanging block-out curtains in a heavy-weight material. You’ll sleep better in a darker room and the thick fabric will keep the heat in and the cold out.
