According to an airport gate agent in the United States, Thomas Lo Sciuto, there’s a relatively simple way to make sure your bag arrives onto the luggage carousel as soon as possible and it comes down to time.
“Bags will always be loaded front to back on the bag carts so if you check in last your bags will be in the last bag cart, which will make them the last on the aircraft, and the first off the aircraft at your destination,” he said.
If only we had known sooner that it was as simple as that! But, there are even more things a passenger can do to get their luggage as quickly and as pain-free as possible.
Lo Sciuto says it’s worth asking the check-in staff to gate-check your bag, which means that luggage is kept in a special section of the plane and is returned to you as you leave the plane.
Doesn’t that just sound magical?
“The downside of that method is that you will not be able to pack liquids or any other items that cannot go in a carry-on bag as you will need to bring the bag with you through the security checkpoint and to the gate,” Lo Sciuto added.
But perhaps the best and simplest piece of advice Lo Sciuto has is that it never hurts to be nice to the counter and gate agents, no matter their response.
The kinder and nicer you are to them, the more likely they will be accommodating to you and your individual needs.
“Chances are the agent has already been yelled at multiple times for things they can't control, so they will go out of their way to help someone who is nice!”
It certainly pays to be kind at the airport, on anywhere for that matter.
