You only need these 6 things to achieve a stylish home

And they’re all affordable. - by Laura Barry

You only need these 6 things to achieve a stylish home

For those who appreciate interior design, a beautifully styled home that successfully balances contemporary trends with classic style is the ultimate goal. Regardless whether your home is themed around a bohemian vibe or mid-century modern furniture, there’s only a few key pieces that have the power to bring any look together, regardless of your personal taste.

Fortunately, those few key pieces are easy to obtain, and more affordable than furniture, but picking the right one can be tricky. These are the only 6 things you need for a stylish home.

1. An eye-catching lamp

Whether it’s a floor lamp, desk lamp or on the bedside table, a lamp that is equal parts beautiful and practical will elevate any interior. Treat this lamp as an investment piece for your room and select something that appeals to your personal taste, but is classic in style so it can work within any interior.

2. A large indoor plant

The power of the indoor plant is unlimited. It can make any room feel instantly chic, while improving your air quality as well. Select a large indoor foliage plant that suits your gardening-level and the environment of the room. Take the style-stakes up a notch by splashing a little extra cash on a gorgeous ceramic pot or basket to house your new frondy friend.

3. Natural texture

Leather, cotton, linen, wool, timber, jute and sisal are all natural materials that are often spotted in gorgeous interior schemes because they add texture, depth and authenticity to a space. Pick furniture, rugs, textiles, baskets, curtains and decorative objects made  or upholstered in these materials and incorporate them into your space for added style points.

4. A statement vase

There’s nothing quite as cheerful (or polished!) as a slick vase full of fresh blooming flowers. If you’re weekend schedule generally involves buying a bunch of flowers from your local farmers market, ensure you have a beautiful statement vase - whether it be glass or ceramic - to host your precious posies in style.

5. A decorative tray

Trays have the remarkable ability to make anything look neat and organised. A good decorative tray can also take an empty table, shelf or dresser from zero to hero in no time. If you find your make-up, kitchen bench, coffee table or perfumes tend to look unruly and haphazard, purchase a tray and pop everything on top of it. Et voila! A tidy ‘collection’ of similar items is now presented stylishly. Stick to classics such as marble and metallics.

6. A luxe rug

It doesn’t matter if you live in a tiny apartment or sprawling open-plan house, a rug can make all the difference to your interior – but make sure you don’t go too small! Even if your available floor space is limited, pick a rug that almost stretches from wall to wall to give the room a more spacious feel. Similarly, a rug in an open-plan home can ‘zone’ a space. Pick a plush rug that feels luxe underfoot and don’t be afraid to choose something with colour.
