Is your lawn looking a little unitdy? The quickest way to spruce it up is by trimming the edges.

Problem

Without a defined edge, grass has quickly invaded the garden beds and mowing near shrubs has become difficult.

Solution

Widen beds by removing a strip of grass. Dig a spaded edge for quick and easy future maintenance.

Here's how:

Step 1

Use a sharpened spade to make side-by-side cuts in grass about 30cm from edge of bed. Slide spade under to lift grass, roots and all.

Step 2

Dig out any grass and weeds that have grown beneath plants in garden bed.

Step 3

Enrich newly cleared soil with a composted garden mix (from landscape supply companies). This will improve quality and fertility of soil.

Step 4

Plant widened section with low growers and infill any bare patches under existing plants. In newly enriched soil they will all establish and grow quickly.

Mulch around all plants with shredded bark or other organic mulch. This looks good, helps conserve soil moisture and suppresses growth of seedling weeds.
